The Back Story
When Alicia and Doug were living in the Pacific Northwest, they were involved in public education and all that it entails. One morning, they were talking of moving back to the desert, Phoenix to be more exact. While sitting over coffee and bagels at their local bagel shop, the talk was of adventures they planned to take. Doug suggested a return to the marketing and design business, as education was a second career. He would do the design and Alicia would do the paperwork and geeky stuff. They both figured Doug could get a part-time job teaching and Alicia would start out with a web design company. This surely would be an exciting and new adventure.
They went back and forth on what they should name the company. They mashed their names together and talked of some day sharing each other’s last names but for now the company could use the name instead. It sounded good but they still weren’t convinced. While sipping at her coffee, Alicia read the local paper. The main article was about local vagrant life and the different things the homeless would do to survive while traveling from state to state. One of the interviewees was a well known vagrant who held a sign made of cardboard, "Why lie, I need $$ for a beer."
In the article the homeless man stated that he traveled the country via railroad hitching rides on trains, "flying the cardboard". Alicia read the article aloud to Doug and said, "That would be a great business name...Flying Cardboard." She giggled, "If we don’t make it, we’ll be out flying our own cardboard." Doug heartily agreed and this is how Flying Cardboard all began.
