Welcome to the second edition of Fly Paper. As Flying Cardboard's business associates and acquaintances, we bring you editorials, features, satire, business and technology tips, and expert perspectives on a monthly basis. We hope you will be entertained and educated.

Our focus for Fly Paper is to be about people, people in business, education, art, and places where those people go. Last month we were inspired with our interview with Milly Guthrie with the T-Shirt Shop that we decided to design some t-shirts with our own artwork.

This newsletter is for people like you and if you know someone who would like to receive Fly Paper, pass it on. Would you like to contribute your ideas, commentaries, ads, or questions to Fly Paper? Contact us. Imagine the next feature could be you or your business. Volunteer your ideas. We cannot promise to publish them all but we will read all submissions.

To ensure we comply with anti-spam laws we will: add our company name and address information to each email, provide unsubscribe links in each mailing, and automatically remove subscribers upon request. Now that all the legal mumbo-jumbo is out of the way, enjoy Fly Paper.

This month’s editorial is “Marquees: Are they effective marketing tools?” Feature article is “Hispanic American Central: Not a Junior High Dance.” In “Visual Essays,” we will be featuring Jamie Primakow. Check out our contribution article, “Auto Purchasing Tips from the Pros!” from Kathy Dugas. Considering purchasing a new camera? Be sure to read "Buying a Digital Camera."

Not all ideas, commentary, etc. are of Flying Cardboard's principles.

Marquees: Are they effective marketing tools?

I have to ask, do they even bring in the right clients? Ok, you’re probably asking what do marquees have to do with anything. Be patient with me, while I set the stage.

About two weeks ago, I passed an accountant’s office that I pass on my way to a favorite hiking spot. When I pass, I notice

the brick building and marquee out front and think, “What a prestigious looking place to work.” Every time, I can visualize a regal-looking man with little glasses barely on the tip of his nose. He sits behind his large desk punching buttons on an old adding machine doing someone’s taxes. However, the glamour completely left this last time I went by. (continue to story)

Hispanic American Central: Not a junior high dance

Have you ever been to a junior high school dance; you know, music playing in the background with boys on one side of the dance floor and girls on the other? Forget about junior high school dances. Have you attended your average networking event? It often feels like one of those dances. Hispanic American Central’s (HAC) July event was far from that.

Jamie Primakow

WOW! A true geek artist, is it possible? That may be one way to describe the works of Jamie Primakow, a student at the Art Institute of Phoenix and young entrepreneur. She has already begun to develop an impressive clientele as a web designer. “I grew up in a household with geeks and started out with the intent of becoming a programmer; but working with code alone was not enough.” (continue to story)

Technology Tips & Tricks Corner

Dear IT Guy,
I paid upwards of $5000 for a website. The web designer created a very cool flash website, with the latest technology, Flash. When I view my stats on my website, I cannot get an accurate count of hits per each page. How can I have my web designer set my website to have all the pages in my flash site counted? The demographics of my website help me to accurately project where my clients come from. — Flashy

Dear Flashy,
Your problem is common with flash websites. The problem however, is not an easy fix nor inexpensive. You have to understand that websites created in Flash the technology differs than html and your server cannot give you an accurate hit count. The search engine spiders and bots also have no way of crawling your site and your site's ranking is affected. To help with this, your web designer could mirror your site in html. The problem is it begins to get costly - in essence, having two sites. Had you come to me sooner, I would have told you to have an html site with Flash components. It is cheaper, helps with ranking and hits, loads faster, looks classier, and much more. I hope this helps. — IT Guy

Auto Purchasing Tips from the Pros!

Auto Brokers – Turning Stressful into Stress Free!

Welcome to the first in a series of articles that will discuss many issues you face when you purchase or lease a new or pre-owned vehicle.  Not knowing how to handle these issues can cost you a lot of money, a lot of time, and result in unnecessary frustration.  In future articles, I will discuss such issues as leasing versus purchasing, when to buy an extended warranty, when to buy new versus used, etc.  This article defines what an Auto Broker is and when to use one.
